Environment Agency called out as RNLI battles second day of diesel spill

THE RNLI is dealing with a fuel spillage in Holes Bay.

The leak involved a lifeboat moored at its base at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution training centre in West Quay Road.

A spokesman for the charity said the fuel was diesel and described it as a small spill, although an eyewitness reported the fuel reaching the other side of the bay.

"We have had a leak from the All Weather Lifeboat at the College, someone called the harbour master as soon as they saw it," the spokesman said yesterday.

"We deployed our spill resolutions team who were there within 10-15 minutes. They have the boom out and have started to clear up the diesel. It should be sorted out pretty soon."

An RNLI spokesman confirmed this morning that crews were sent out again at first light to continue the clean-up.

He said “a lot fuel” had gone onto the rocks and that the Environment Agency and Poole Harbour Control have been invited to assess the situation. He said the lifeboat was not the All Weather Lifeboat but just "a lifeboat" more at the college.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said lifeboat teams were out in a dinghy using absorbent materials to soak up the fuel.

"I came home from work and smelled fuel in the air, then opened the door and saw it all in the water," she said.

The RNLI spokesman said the diesel tended to spread in a very thin film over water and the spill would look worse than it was.

"Our teams are prepared for this eventuality," she said.
